How Expired EMS Personnel Can Easily Reenter the System in North Carolina
Home » 911 e-Learning News » How Expired EMS Personnel Can Easily Reenter the System in North Carolina

Exciting changes have been implemented for EMS providers in North Carolina! Effective April 1, the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS) has updated the EMS credential reentry requirements, making it easier for providers to reenter the system, regardless of how long their credentials have been expired. Here’s what you need to know about the new process and how 911 e-Learning Solutions can help you get recertified.
No More Time Limits for Reentry
Previously, EMS providers who let their credentials expire faced restrictions based on the number of years since expiration. These limitations often made it difficult for experienced professionals to return to the field. The good news is that NCOEMS has now removed these time restrictions. No matter how long it has been since your credentials expired, you can now follow a streamlined process to regain your certification at the level you previously held. However, to be eligible for this reentry process, you must have been in the credentialing database called Continuum at some point.
The Reentry Process
To reenter the EMS system, you must complete the following steps:
- Take an NC Refresher Course: Enroll in a refresher course at your previous certification level. 911 e-Learning Solutions offers online, self-paced refresher courses that you can start anytime. This flexibility allows you to study at your own pace and fit the coursework into your schedule. You can find the appropriate course for your level here: 911 e-Learning Solutions NC Refresher Courses.
- Complete a Proctored Final Exam: The Refresher Course will have a proctored final exam component. You must pass this proctored final exam to progress to the Skills and TSOP.
- Complete Skills/TSOP Component: After finishing the online refresher course, you’ll need to complete the skills and TSOP (Technical Scope of Practice) component in person. 911 e-Learning Solutions can help coordinate this part of the process. We aim to make this step as convenient as possible for you.
- Pass the State Exam: Once you’ve completed the refresher course, the proctored final exam, and the skills/TSOP component, you’ll be eligible to schedule and take the NCOEMS State exam. Passing the written state exam will result in your recertification.
